The 26-year-old broke the Games record on the first leg during the 100m on July 24 with a time of 26.38. The previous games record for the 50m Men's breaststroke was held by Liam Tanock of Team England who set the feat of 24.62 in Dehli, 2010.

After setting a new games record Houlie went onto claim silver in the men's 50m breaststroke on July 27 with a time of 26.77 finishing just behind Australia’s Sam Williamson.

Houlie took part in Team South Africa's mixed medley relay squad with Pieter Coetze, Erin Gallagher and Aimee Canny. The team stormed to second place in 3:42.61 at Tollcross International Swim Centre gaining them a silver medal.

After his silver in the breaststroke event Houlie said: “It’s not what I wanted but it is what I got.

"I can’t really remember the race in detail but I will take a look and get the feedback and move forward. There’s a lot of things I can say technically weren’t great, but it’s one race. We move forward, I’ve got to be grateful with silver, even though I was here for gold.”
